First Walkathon organized by Hand In Hand USA a Grand Success!

By Sherrie Banerjee

The very first walkathon in the region by Hand In Hand USA(“HIH USA”), a non-profit organization based in the USA was conducted seamlessly on August 19th at Chattahoochee Pointe Park in Forsyth County, Georgia. HIH USA was established in 2001 to provide humanitarian aid and their mission is to serve impoverished communities in India and humanity at large during times of need. The largest project of HIH USA, is Hariharananda Balashram, a residential school caring for and educating students from pre-kindergarten to 10th grade.

Each year 40 new students are enrolled, reaching the school capacity at 480 students. They are selected from extremely impoverished situations, and are either homeless or come from homes with parents who have no means to support the child.

HIH USA is run entirely by volunteers and hence over 95% of the funds raised directly benefit the children. Atlanta volunteers have been working tirelessly for months planning and spreading the word about the first walkathon. It was refreshing to see many High schoolers and Troop 205 Boy Scout troops taking an active role in volunteering for this event as well. Few volunteers traveled all the way from Douglas County and shared farm fresh tomatoes and home cooked breakfast for the participants.

The weather could not have been better with a sunny and breezy 75 degrees around 9 am on a summer morning. About 150 people attended the event that was kicked off with an introduction about HIH USA and a video of the selfless work being done by the organization to improve destitute children’s life. Participants had a drink or a snack before setting off on a gorgeous 3.1-mile nature trail. The trail itself was dotted with shady trees, views of the scenic Chattahoochee River, newly constructed bridges and resting benches. Most walkers were engrossed in making new friends and appreciating the beauty of nature around them.

Chilled water bottles were handed out to all returning walkers. Upon finishing the walk the aroma of spices wafted into the air and walkers were greeted with delicious South Indian breakfast, bagels, bananas, coffee and juices. The walkers enjoyed the appetizing breakfast and the shady retreat around the pavilion and play area.

Due to the coordinated efforts of the volunteers of many age groups, participants learned about HIH USA’s mission. Local children got glimpses of life at residential life at Hariharananda Balashram in India. People enjoyed the walk at the serene park and contributed to a very worthy cause.
