Nrupatunga Kannada Koota, Atlanta’s association of Kannadigas,
plans to celebrate its 35th anniversary in a big way next year,
announced Kannada Koota President Dr. H.N. Ramaswamy.
Dr. Ramaswamy was speaking at the association’s Sankranthi
celebration at the Riverdale Hindu Temple on Saturday, February
24. He recalled that the association, which had begun with just
15 members, had now grown to include some 400 families.

The Sankranthi celebration was a huge success, with a big
turnout. The event began with a quiz show relating to the
history and people of Karnataka, followed by a cultural show.
Children dressed up in various costumes for a fancy dress show.
The play, “Beralugalu”, performed by
children,
and directed by Venkatesh Biligere and Mangala Madhusudhan, drew
much applause for its message of unity as well as the children’s
admirable delivery of dialogue. Vibha Biligere, Nisha, Chandana,
Spoorthi Bharadwaj and Visruta Arun performed the roles of the
fingers of a hand while Pradyumna Rao played the judge who rules
that the fingers can be powerful only when they come together as
a fist. Aditi Srinivasaiah and Rashmi Anand choreographed a
dance for teenagers to the tune of a Kannada film song. Another
film song-based dance was choreographed by Nidhi Singh. A group
of students from Padmaja Kellam’s dance school staged
Pushpanjali, a Bharatanatyam piece set to fusion music. The
final performance was a much-awaited dance number directed by
Dr.Jayanti Srinivasaiah and Ramya, where men and women danced to
three popular Kannada film songs.
