Remark | Nafisa
(Ben) Barot has been championing the efforts of local
communities to achieve self-reliance in natural resources for over two
decades. She is a founder member of Utthan, a not-for-profit group
working on the empowerment of women and impoverished communities and
providing socio-technical assistance. In the tribal belt of Gujarat,
India, Utthan has been involved in large-scale drought proofing efforts
through well deepening and recharging and building of roof collection
water tanks. Income generating activities have reduced distressed
migration. Nafisa Ben has served in committees and forums at the state, national and international levels to generate more gender-sensitive policies. She has advocated on gender discrimination in environmental issues, violence against women and gender perspective in communal conflicts. As the coordinator for the South Asia region for the Water Supply Sanitation Collaborative Council (WSSCC - now known as WASH), she has been working to implement people-centered approaches in the management of local environments. Nafisa Ben has also been involved in efforts to promote understanding between different sections of society to counter communal violence. She will speak about her work. |
