On January 15, 2007 this nation and the entire world celebrates
the birth of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who through his
leadership and adherence to the principles of non-violence
learned from the struggles of Mahatma Gandhi in overthrowing
British Colonialism in India, changed the landscape of United
States from continuous racial violence that raged through the
country
during the 1960's. Dr. King's struggles saw the emergence of
freedom for all people
in America. This unique honor was bestowed upon a civilian by
the Government
of United States.
Such has been the influence of Gandhi on Dr. King, that recently
the United States Information Services at New Delhi, India
requested permission to reprint the article "The Influence of
Gandhi on the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr." by
Dr. H.V. Shivadas that appeared on the Gandhi Foundation web
site (www.gandhifoundationusa.com)
for publication in their brochure to be distributed during the
Martin Luther King, Jr. Birthday.
In the same spirit, this year the Gandhi Foundation
representatives Subash Razdan, Chairman and Giriraj Rao,
Executive Director and Consul General of India, S.M. Gavai have
also been invited to attend the Annual Commemorative service in
Heritage Sanctuary of Atlanta's Ebenezer Baptist Church. The
participants include national policy makers, educators, civil
and human rights activists, religious leaders, members of
Ebenezer's congregation and
the community leaders-at-large.
Honorable S.M. Gavai will also be serving as one of the Marshals
at the March that will be held on Auburn Ave in front of the
King Center, Mr. Fred Watson, "V" Man of the " International
Campaign for Victory Over Violence" will be the first team to
lead the march together with Dr. H.V. Shivadas, Director of
Operations of the Gandhi Foundation at 1pm on Monday,
January 15th. There will be a number of persons of Indian origin
including Dr. Commander Selvam and a number of priests from the
Hindu Temple of Georgia and others marching in this parade.
This is a great occasion for all of us to demonstrate our
solidarity and to show that we also are very much part of this
National Celebration. This gives us an opportunity to make it
known that the Civil Rights Legislation signed by President
Lyndon B. Johnson has been a boon to all of us and the civil
rights revolution was the result of the non-violent philosophy
of
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. who was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi.
Let us honor
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by our participation in the March
and other activities that are taking place in Metro Atlanta to
make this day meaningful to all of us. Those wishing to
participate in the March should gather on Peachtree Street,
between Harris and Baker at 10:30am.
