Customary Gaiety marks Dusshera Celebrations at
Atlanta Vedic Temple
Spontaneous was the festive mood in the huge congregation that
assembled on Oct. 8 at Atlanta Vedic Temple for the celebration
of Dussehra that signifies the triumph of good over evil.
Dushera also conveys an equally powerful message that however
erudite and learned in Vedic knowledge a scholar may be, he
cannot overpower a righteous person - if the manner of his
living is immoral and not in consonance with the teachings of
Vedas.
Vinod Sharma and his team of temple devotees had worked
indefatigably to create the Atlanta’s most gigantic Ravan
effigy, to re-enact his inglorious fall. Ravan realized
belatedly that “Shri Raam” was the incarnation of Truth and he
never swerved from the path of righteousness.

A Havan accompanied by the chanting of Mantras was performed in
which many offered oblations and prayed for bestowing wisdom to
discern right from wrong. As an act of culmination, a symbolic
arrow was aimed at the effigy of Ravan to create the
conflagration to destroy Ravan.
The presence of many vendors created an atmosphere of Mela with
the booths offering delicious food, family photography,
spiritual books, costume jewelry, Mehandi and face make-ups.
The indelible message - that Lord Rama is the embodiment of
Vedic Dharma and that we should imbibe his divine qualities -
continued to linger in the minds of the devotees as they left
the temple precincts. |
